How Tech Firms Are Leading the Way in Telecommuting in the Time of COVID
  • Sharebar

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our lives in countless ways. For many companies, that has included turning to telecommuting in order to keep businesses up and running in these challenging times. So maybe it will come as no surprise that it’s the tech industry that is leading the way in this work-from-home trend. Here are a few excellent examples of tech firms that have embraced telecommuting:

  • Facebook: CEO Mark Zuckerberg not only applauds telecommuting right now – he predicts that within the next 5 to 10 years, 50% of his Facebook employees will be working from home on a regular basis.
  •  Google: According to Alphabet, Inc. CEO Sundar Pichai, employees at its Google subsidiary (including contract workers) will continue to work from home until at least July 2021. Originally Google estimated that employees would return to the office on July 6, 2020. Later, that date was pushed back to January 2021. But now that medical experts don’t expect a vaccine to be available until sometime in 2021, Google executives have revised their return-to-the-office estimate to July of next year.
  • Microsoft: As of the date of this writing, Microsoft employees can continue working from home through October, although the company may let some return to the office voluntarily in a safe manner. However, as the virus continues to surge in the summer of 2020, Microsoft may extend their work-from-home policies past October, and they could very well rethink sending workers back to the office anytime soon.
  • Twitter: CEO Jack Dorsey sent notification to its employees on May 12, 2020, telling them that many of them would be allowed to telecommute on a permanent basis if they so desired.

Although some companies have allowed employees to telecommute – at least on a part-time basis – for several years, for many business owners and managers, letting employees work from home can be an unsettling prospect. If you’re one of those, we have some good news: MySammy is a cloud-based software tool designed specifically to aid you in supervising a remote work staff.
